Cruelty free products: what are they? Look here!
Today much is said about cruelty free products. But do you know exactly what they are? Meet today and see the advantages and why to use them.
What are cruelty free brands?
These are brands that dispense with the use of animals in their production process for testing new products and formulas. Therefore, this seal refers to manufacturers of cosmetics, hygiene and beauty products that do not use animals as tests.
The term, therefore, refers to respect for animal life and the non-use of animals as guinea pigs. However, it is not just about the direct use of animals. It also includes indirect usage. That is, that the brand does not use ingredients whose manufacturers use animal testing.
Thus, it is required that the brand does not use animals in its tests and also does not sponsor third-party tests on animals.
Therefore, to find out if O Boticário is cruelty free, it is necessary to analyze these points in its conduct. Below, then, check if the Boticário group can be seen in this way.
After all, is the O Boticário brand really cruelty free?
The Boticário brand points out that it has not used animal tests for over 20 years. Also, it does not use ingredients that come from animal testing. Therefore, it can be considered cruelty free.
Its products have seals that indicate the recognition of these conditions by important international bodies, as we will see below. What should be clear, however, is that O Boticário may be cruelty free, but it is not vegan.
A vegan company is one that does not use ingredients of animal origin, whatever it may be. Likewise, it requires the company not to sponsor events that sacrifice or mistreat animals.
However, what happens is that despite Boticário being cruelty free, it uses some ingredients of animal origin. For example, milk and honey, among many others. However, it is already possible to see great advances of the brand.
A simple search on its website shows that Boticário has 1,017 vegan products. That is, without any ingredient of animal origin. In addition, all those that are like this have information on the packaging, being easily recognizable.
Finally, it should be noted that even with some cruelty free stamps, O Boticário still causes some controversy regarding its conduct. Below, understand.
What does the O Boticário brand say?
O Boticário emphasizes, on its page, the non-existence of the use of animals in tests. See what the group's publication says in April 2021:
“Grupo Boticário and O Boticário have not carried out animal tests on products manufactured in their operations, for their own and/or licensed brands, or on raw materials for over 20 years, even though there is no legislation that prohibits the practice in Brazil, and demands the same commitment from its suppliers.
We do not carry out tests on animals and we were pioneers in Brazil in the creation of alternative methods. Today, there are more than 50 methods developed by our researchers, which guarantee the safety and efficacy of the products. Among them, the 3D skin stands out – which simulates human skin – and the organs on a chip – which acts as a human organ on a chip.”
In addition, the brand is proud of its seals that attest to the non-use of animals in tests. See, then, what the Boticário brand says about being cruelty free:
“We have PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies seal for brands that offer cosmetics and other personal care products that are not tested on animals. We also have the Leaping Bunny seal, which means that all products from our brands are approved by the animal protection organization Cruelty Free International, an international reference program that certifies products free of animal cruelty”.
What do they say about it?
As we saw above, O Boticário claims to be cruelty free at the same time that it supports seals from important institutions that affirm it. Where, then, are the controversies? Well, let's get down to the facts.
Many institutions and representatives of the vegan and animal cause claim that O Boticário would not really be cruelty free. And that would result from the fact that it is part of ABIHPEC (Brazilian Association of the Personal Hygiene, Perfumery and Cosmetics Industry).
Or rather, not only is it part of, but also occupies important roles in the board of the Association. Thus, in 2018 this association, whose presidency was in the hands of Grupo Boticário, filed a lawsuit with the Federal Supreme Court.
This action, then, aimed to overturn some state laws that prohibit the use of animals in tests. Therefore, activists point out that O Boticário is not cruelty free. And this is due to the fact that he is still trying to overthrow norms that protect the animal kingdom.
In this sense, the main argument of the activists is that the company occupied the presidency of ABIHPEC. With that, he took a harmful position that would represent the principles of the company.
Therefore, even if Boticário does not use animal tests in its production process, it is as if it were in favor of the release. And, with that, it allowed other companies and Boticário itself to use these tests.
