When we think of cats, talking about their fur is almost commonplace. That's because, most of the time, when we think of cats, we think of cute animals, licking their own bodies and spreading threads all over their owners' clothing and corners.

And, as much as we also like breeds like the Sphynx, naked:

It's hard to resist a pussy like the fluffy Maine coon, isn't it?

However, do you know what cat fur is for? Do you know how to take care of them and prevent them from spreading around the house so much? Do you know how to prevent cats from throwing up (so many)m hairballs?

With that in mind, we Mister Cat we went after some tips about that part of the animal that is so showy – the fur.

Although all the hair looks the same, seen from afar, anyone who has a cat knows: the animal's hair is not just a detail. So, check out our coat tips here, and learn how to take better care of your feline.

Fur is not just fur!

For some animals, fur is a way of disguising themselves. Others, to warm up. For some, still, the coat indicates a form of communication.

As for cats, we can say that it's a little bit of everything. So much so, that even the color of the fur influences the shape of the cat a little. So, the first thing to think about is that the cat's fur it's not just fur - it's essential for the cat to live healthy.

But what are the characteristics that make the cat's fur so important?

1. Maintain temperature.

Cats don't sweat like humans. They sweat, too, but it's mostly from their paws. Hair, on the contrary, sometimes even help the pet to cool off. That's because, the animal licks itself, and that saliva is trapped in the wires, helping its body to regulate its temperature.

In winter, I think we don't even need to say it, do we? Furry cats keep warmer. That's why hair is so important for cats.

2. Communicate

When the cat wants to “say” something to its owner, it can use meows, body language or… Fur!

That's because, through the way the hair is, we can understand how the pet is, or what it's feeling. The clearest obvious example is that of the “Halloween Cat”, that is, with the hair all standing up.

In this case, it is a behavior that demonstrates fear – and then, the hairs rise to make the animal appear larger, and thus, “counter-scare” what is scaring it.

If the cat is licking himself too much, then we have a clear sign that something in his health is not going well. It could be an allergy, heat, irritation, parasites…

3. Mark your presence

Although cats prefer to mark their territory with urine, when they rub themselves around the house (or you, your clothes, your bed), leaving tufts of hair there, what they are actually doing is leaving their mark.

Yes, the hairs are a “signature” of the animal, to show that he is in charge there. So, when there are lots of threads on the sofa, or on your clothes, the cat is emphasizing that this is its “territory”.

In the face of all this, the question arises: how to take care of the fur of the kittens? Are you doing it right?

Brushing

The first care that a guardian should have with his cat is with regard to brushing. Brushing a cat's hair very carefully is essential for your pet's health.

In addition to being a moment when the guardian and the animal become closer - and that's vital, for him to like you and strengthen the affective bonds.

When you brush a cat's fur, either with a brush or with a glove, you remove dirt that is trapped in the wires and the animal cannot reach, avoids the formation of knots, and removes excess hair.

Your cat will shed dead hairs, the same way we shed hair. In some breeds, however, the thicker coat prevents these strands from falling out. Then, the cat will tongue them out – forming hairballs, which your friend will inevitably throw up.

With brushing, you help this cleaning, and prevent the licks from forming very thick fur balls.

Baths

As much as cats bathe with licks, baths with water and specific products for cats are essential.

Bathing with soap and water doesn't just help to make the cat's fur shinier and smellier. It reduces dead hair and microscopic dirt, helps keep the skin clean in furry breeds, and prevents diseases with parasites and mycoses.

Periodicity depends greatly on each breed, so visiting a vet frequently is also very important for the cat's health. This professional will be able to better analyze your friend, and recommend the most appropriate baths, products and way to dry the hair.

Observation: Yes, drying the coat is very important, but drying varies from breed to breed.

Portion

Many cat tutors don't know, but the feed decisively influences the formation of the pet's coat.

Just think about it: fur doesn't just grow, it grows according to proper nutrition, and the excess of one or another nutrient will influence the length, thickness and color of the cat's fur.

Thus, it is essential that the tutor takes his cat to the veterinarian regularly, and there, solve all his doubts. The veterinarian will be able to identify possible problems such as falling, lack of proteins or vitamins, and then guide a change in food.

Not always the most famous feed is the most suitable, and this will reflect on your friend's coat.

Environment

Maintaining a suitable environment for your cat can also influence how his hair will grow. Human beings, who suffer situations of great stress pull out strands of hair without realizing it. Cats too.

Therefore, a safe house, a friendly and affectionate relationship and lots of toys and scratchers will make sure your cat feels good. And this will be noticed in his health, and, consequently, in his hair.
