Discover how to travel with your cat
Anyone who loves to travel and is a cat tutor knows that when the moment of travel arrives, the heart is already tighter. It's your time to rest, but will you leave your feline friend there?
Suppressing this lack, Pet Friendly Hotels begin to emerge. That is, hotels that will serve you and your cat with the same quality, concern and care.
Of course, before, there were already hotels that served people, and accepted animals. In the case of Pet Friendly hotels, however, the hotel staff will have chambermaids, hostesses and cleaners who serve people and animals.
Soon, traveling with your cat becomes a wonderful idea, isn't it? However, even with all this care, you will still need to prepare for your trip with your cat.
Some precautions are essential. Do you know what these are? What tips do you have to make it all work out? Check it out now, and travel without fear!
1. Can your cat enter the country?
It is an increasingly rare case. However, there are countries where the entry of animals, even domestic ones, is prohibited. So, before you start thinking about traveling with your cat, first find out if your destination allows the entry of cats.
And under what conditions? Like this? Perhaps it is more common in the case of dogs, but did you know that some abominable practices, such as cutting the animal's tail, are still not practiced by illegal breeders? And that some countries, seeking to combat this, prohibit the entry of “operated” animals?
That way, the first step is to find out if your cat can go to that place. Many countries can ask for an International Veterinary Certificate. To find out if this is the case, visit the country's embassy website.
2. What to bring
Once the location is settled, let's go to the luggage. The first and most important tip is what to bring on the trip. You need to think about clothes, medicine, food, toys…
If the trip is in national territory, everything is much simpler. For example, the feed sold in São Paulo will most likely also be sold in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre, Recife…
If your trip is international, then the reason for attention begins.
Will the city where you are staying have that specific feed for your cat's health condition, for example? If your cat has diabetes, can you easily find the right insulin for him?
It is worth remembering that some brands are multinational (Whiskas, Purin, Royal Canin, etc.). However, trade names for feeds may change from country to country.
The same goes for medicine. Some may even have prohibited substances in their composition (Dipyrone, for example, was abolished in the United States). So you and your vet needed to research and think together about solutions, if any.
Bringing translated recipes is also essential.
3. Transporting the cat
If you and the cat are going to travel by car or bus (or even train), transportation is easier. All you need is a carrier that's big enough for the animal to stand up, walk around in, and you're good to go.
You may have to buy a seat just for the cat. but that's okay, isn't it?
Now, if the trip is by plane, then things get more difficult. First, you need to know the conditions imposed by the airline to transport animals. Do you need to ship the animal? Can you go in the cabin?
Then you need to be very careful to leave the shipping box securely locked and labeled. Most likely the company will provide identifiers for you by name, address, itinerary. But, just in case, reinforce it with stickers indicating that there is a live animal there, with small signposts attached with resistant ropes…
Check with your veterinarian to see if your cat will need any specific medication for the trip (atmospheric pressure can cause your cat's ears to hurt). So, check with the company how to make sure the cat has plenty of food and water in the carrier.
4. Don't forget documents and vaccination card – bilingual
Even if your plane travels within the country, always carry documents and the cat's vaccination card, both in Portuguese and in English.
If you're going to a country with different alphabets (China, Japan, Russia), it might be a good idea to have a version in that alphabet, too.
Why, even on national trips (by plane)? Because an airport is a place where there are people from many countries. And, confusions can happen.
As for the updated vaccination record, this is a public health issue. Some countries prohibit the entry of people and animals that do not have the necessary vaccines. It is a way to protect the population of that country.
You can usually find this information on the website of the embassy of that country.
5. Take “feel at home” to the letter
Your cat, like all cats, probably hates change. We've already talked about things that cats don't like very much. Moving and tours are two of them.
Therefore, for your cat not to be stressed, it is vital that he has toys and references from your home, where you go. Toys, blankets, and at least 1 scratching post will make your cat calmer.
In the case of the sandbox, it might be easier to take a box and buy the sand on site. Then you dispose of it in the proper trash. Carrying sand can be an unnecessary burden.
In addition, as soon as you arrive at the hotel, however pet friendly it may be, it is better to determine the spaces for the cat in the room. You don't want to run the risk of having to pay to fix a sofa upholstery, do you?
golden tips
- Get to know the hotel you and your cat are going to very well, and on the first day, make the most complete tour possible. In case your cat escapes (either from the day care hotel service or from your room), knowing where he might be will make the search much easier.
- It is essential that your cat wear a collar with: A) the cat's name; B) your name; C) hotel address; D) address of the embassy of your country of origin in that city. All information needs to be in English and, if possible, in the local language.
- Do not believe that your cat will know how to guide itself by smell. So, never let him go for a “walk”. And if you go out with him, use a leash attached to the collar.
- Take out travel insurance for the cat, and have the phone numbers and addresses of at least 3 local veterinarians (covered by insurance) handy.
Traveling with your cat…
It's a bit of work. Like traveling with kids. But in the case of the cat, it is even more so. The cat won't obey you (okay, the kid probably won't either).
On the other hand, it can be a wonderful time for you, and whoever else is with you, to have great memories and fun with the cutest, furriest member of the family.
So, if you think it's important for your cat to be with you on the trip, go for it. Just follow these advices, and put care and common sense in front of you, and your trip will be unforgettable!
