Cats, like all animals, pee to release substances that pass through the kidneys, but are not useful to the organism. This in a very general way, to make it clear, the main thing: your cat pees, and peeing is a sign of health.
But not always, daily pee is a sign of perfect health, you know?
First, it's important to say that the place where your cat pees speaks about him. Second, that sometimes, the pee he is doing is not always a sign of health.
It sounds confusing, but it's actually quite simple. Read here, your definitive guide to understanding that all-important substance, cat pee.
Cat pee smells like… Cat pee!
Does cat urine smell bad? Yes. But it smells bad, just like the urine of a person, a dog or another mammal.
Very generally speaking, mammalian urine is made up of about 95% of water, about 3% of urea (a mixture of sodium, chlorine, potassium, and other components found in proteins), and 2% of other substances. This mixture is the result of the kidneys filtering the blood. In other words, pee is the liquid component of blood that is not used by the body.
As for its appearance and smell, this is more or less the same as ours. Cat urine needs to be pale yellow, very clear, and have a slightly acidic smell. Changes in shape, color or odor are likely to indicate a disease and need to be treated as soon as possible.
So, there's no way, cat pee will smell bad. But it will stink like all pee. Like the pee of the baby, the dog, or the kids in the house who forget to lift the lid or clean the “leaks”.
Therefore, it is important for cat owners to combat this prejudice: that cat pee smells worse than that of other animals.
Why do cats pee in the sand (or, why don't they)?
You are probably accessing the Mister Cat you've read in several places something that people keep saying. Cats are territorial animals, and have genetic links to wildcats, lions and other non-domestic felines.
This means that the cat will pee sometimes to mark its territory. As if that pee was his signature, showing that he's in charge there.
But in that case, it's important for you to realize that this pee will be a little different from normal pee. And it can be avoided, with adequate training, because, contrary to what is thought, the cats they are not born knowing (how and) where to pee.
A calm, well-fed cat, happy with its environment and routine, and already trained, will pee in the sand. Science doesn't have such a clear answer as to why cats do this.
However, in general, what we know is:
- Cats are animals that (in their territory) value cleanliness and organization.
- When they bury their urine and feces, they do this to hide their presence, because they are instinctively throwing off predators.
So if your cat is peeing out of place, that's a sign of trouble.
Urine as a sign of displeasure
When your cat is stressed, anxious, nervous or dissatisfied, he will show it in many ways. It could be meowing, scratching or… urinating.
To identify the problem, we need to consider a few things:
- Does your cat have access to a healthy, balanced amount of food every day?
- Does your cat have unlimited access to clean drinking water at a suitable temperature?
- Does your cat have enough space to play and rest? Does he like the toys and scratching posts he has?
- Is your cat up to date on vaccinations?
- Does your cat have a regular routine, without major changes or news?
- Are your cat's litter boxes all clean? Is the environment around them clean?
All these factors influence your cat's mood, and therefore, the frequency and location of his urine, you know?
Only a veterinarian will be able to determine which of these factors is influencing your cat's urinary tract. Sometimes his ration is not adequate. Others, the animal is stressed or anxious about some event in the house. In still others, it may be the first sign of an illness.
Therefore, it is essential that you monitor your cat, the way he urinates, the places where he is urinating…
Is your cat peeing on the couch just to get your attention? Probably yes. So pay attention to what he's "talking about".
Identifying urinary tract infections
So, let's assume that our readers are dedicated cat lovers, who take care of their kitties, provide them with adequate food, fun toys, and plenty of room for the furry ones to play (because I know you are!).
Even so, your cat continues to pee outside the box. What can it be? I'm sorry to tell you, but it could be a disease. Therefore, it is extremely important that you pay attention to the signs.
COLOR
The appearance of cat urine, as we said above, is a clear and transparent yellow, like weak white tea. If the urine is clear as water, or dark yellow (or even brown, with spots, or dots), this is a very worrying sign.
SMELL
Regarding the smell, as we said, it is a bad smell. But it's not that different from the smell of a person's or a dog's pee. However, if the smell of cat pee is very strong (or without any smell), it is better to worry and take the animal to the veterinarian.
REACTIONS
Finally, watch when your cat goes to urinate. Does he seem to be peeing painlessly? Is the jet fast and continuous? Urinary tract infections cause pain and irregular urine streams. So, if your cat meows or growls when urinating, be concerned and take him to the vet.
The sooner you notice these signs, the sooner the treatments, and with it, the cures.
Urine cleaning: cleaning cat pee
Finally, one thing remains to be said. Something that takes even the most experienced owners by surprise: cat urine cleaning.
We're not talking about the sandbox. There are special sieves for this, and it is important that you always have a bag of new cat litter to renew the cat's box.
We're talking about an accident: your healthy cat just peed on your new macrome mat! And now?
FIRST: FIND THE PEIXI
The first thing to do, as soon as you notice that your cat has peed outside the box, is to clean the place with a paper towel. But without rubbing, because this could, on the contrary, break down the pee particles, making it even more intertwined with the threads or pores of the surface where it is.
SECOND: TIME TO CLEAN
Then you can use a specific detergent or washing powder to remove pee odors (and poop and vomit). Always following, of course, the manufacturer's guidelines.
On the other hand, if you don't have this product in your house, at the exact moment of the “happening”, follow an infallible recipe.
You will need:
- 2 parts white vinegar
- 1 part water
- 1 glass of hydrogen peroxide
- 1 teaspoon neutral detergent
- Sodium bicarbonate
Mix the two and apply it on the affected area. Wait about 5 minutes. Then spread the bicarbonate, and wait another 10 minutes. Then, mix the hydrogen peroxide and the detergent, and rub the affected area with the mixture, and let everything dry naturally. Finally, clean up what's left with a vacuum cleaner.
Shot and drop, when your cat friend has an “accident”.
