What is cruelty free products?

“Cruelty free” is the English expression for “cruelty free”. But what does that mean? When a product bears this seal, it indicates that its manufacture was not based on animal testing. Likewise, that it did not use products whose manufacture depends on this type of test.

Unfortunately, especially in the cosmetic industry there is a great use of animal testing. And that calls attention, especially for the suffering that is caused to animals. This, incidentally, in times when it is already possible to replace these tests with other techniques.

Therefore, when a product claims to be cruelty free, it means that it does not directly or indirectly use animal testing for its manufacture. That is, that the brand does not promote this type of test. Likewise, it does not maintain partnerships with those who do.

Thus, when we say that a brand has cruelty free products, we are referring to the respect it gives to life, regardless of the species we are talking about. That is, he sees life beyond human beings and understands the need to respect animals.

Also, it should be noted that cruelty free is not the same thing as vegan. While products of the first type do not require testing on animals and ingredients that have used some type of test, the second refers to the absence of ingredients of animal origin in the product.

That is, one refers to carrying out product safety tests using animals. The second refers to the existence or not of ingredients of animal origin in that product. Although they are complementary, therefore, they do not coincide.

How are animal-free products tested?

The development of biotechnology has brought countless new possibilities for manufacturers of cosmetics and products of the most varied nature.

Therefore, even if they are cruelty free products, there are still ways to guarantee the quality of the product.

This quality is revealed in the absence of reactions and dangers to human health due to the correct use of the product. But, then, how to guarantee this when the use of animal tests for reaction analysis is dispensed with?

Among the possibilities are the development of artificial tissues that imitate human tissues such as the skin, gums or eye area. Another possibility, then, is to carry out tests in vitro, which also occur in the laboratory.

Another option, finally, is testing on humans who volunteer for scientific and product development. In that case, then, they are used for testing the quality of products.

What should be clear is that all countries have clear rules about the evidence that a product must present before its commercialization. Therefore, even if they are cruelty free products, they will have passed tests that prove their safety.

In Europe, for example, since 2013 there has been a ban on the manufacture and import of cosmetic products that test on animals or that make use of ingredients whose manufacture, by third parties, depended on these tests.

However, it is clear that it does not dispense with other safety tests, which become possible precisely because of the development of new technologies that allow animals not to be guinea pigs in production processes.
