Discover the 10 Brazilian animals that are threatened with extinction

It is not news to anyone that there are several Brazilian animals threatened with extinction. But I could! After all, how to prevent this situation if there are no efforts to mitigate the destruction of our environment? Take the case of the Pantanal, which has been on fire for months and no effective measures have been taken to remedy the problem.

That saying “here we do it, here we pay” is 100% true. However, in the short term, those who feel the most are the animals, victims of this unsustainable situation that man has caused to nature. As for us, one day we will feel the consequences of this unbridled destruction on our skin.

As we mentioned in our article about the rarest animals in the world, human beings have always been fascinated by wildlife. Unfortunately, his fascination with power at the expense of the environment speaks louder and, now, we have to deal with the fact that we have animals in our Brazil that are at risk of extinction thanks to our negligence. To know who they are, then continue reading our text.

Rarest animals in the world: discover 10 species

There are a variety of animals that are super rare, making it difficult for any of us to have the opportunity to appreciate their rare peculiarities and beauties. Check it out here!

10. Ararajuba

To start our list of endangered Brazilian animals, let's start with the one that features in our text: the macaw. Also known as Guaruba, this bird, which carries Brazil in its green and yellow feathers, has been suffering from trafficking and deforestation in the biome.

According to the Red Book of ICMBio (2016), the Macaw is at vulnerable risk of extinction. This means that if we don't preserve its habitat, it could soon be considered extinct. To further aggravate the situation, your species lives in the Amazon and, therefore, little is known about its habits, which makes its conservation even more difficult.

09. Otter

The otter has already appeared twice on our blog in texts about the rarest animals in the world and about the cute animals that can kill, this being the third time it appears here. Could you, then, ask for music on Fantástico? If so or not, the fact is that the best thing would be for this situation not to exist, since the reason for the giant otter to be on the list is not good at all, since it is only here because it is one of the endangered Brazilian animals.

Like the macaw, the Red Book of ICMBio (2016) classified the otter, also known as the river wolf or giant otter, as endangered and vulnerable. This is because this animal is the target of predatory fishing and illegal hunting, in addition to suffering a lot from the pollution of the rivers of the Pantanal and the Amazon, regions where it lives.

08. Southern Right Whale

When we think of endangered Brazilian animals, one of the last ones that comes to mind is the whale, as it is quite uncommon in our territory. I mean, almost unusual, because we have the Southern Right Whale, which, unfortunately, is also at risk of becoming extinct.

The southern right whale, also known as the southern right whale, inhabits the Brazilian coast. Because it suffers a lot from hunting, fishing, as well as the pollution of the waters of our seas, the ICMBio Red Book (2016) classified it as endangered, which is a degree more worrying than the first two.

07. Pink river dolphin: one of the most famous endangered Brazilian animals

Impossible who has never heard of the pink dolphin! After all, this animal has a legend to call its own, which says that, on full moon nights, it transforms into a handsome and elegant young man who seduces single girls. Well, even the pink river dolphin, an intelligent animal similar to the dolphin that lives in the Amazonian waters, is in danger of extinction.

Considered the largest freshwater dolphin, the pink river dolphin has been decreasing over time in terms of population numbers. This is because they use the species as bait for fishing and, more currently, it suffers from the construction of hydroelectric plants, in addition to being a constant target of animal exploitation for tourism. So, you already know: if you are going to visit this region of Brazil, avoid the tours that involve swimming with the dolphin, as it suffers from this trade.

06. Pantanal deer

In sixth place on the list of 10 endangered Brazilian animals is the Pantanal deer, whose scientific name is Blastocerus dichotomus. It is the largest deer in South America, living in the Pantanal, in addition to the Amazon and the Cerrado.

According to information on past population decline and projected future population decline, ICMBio has classified the marsh deer as endangered. Although its population decline is 50% less than the last 18 years, it is still greater than 30%. The main reason for this factor is deforestation and illegal hunting, in addition to the construction of hydroelectric dams in the Paraná River basin.

05. Black-winged saki: little known, it is one of the endangered Brazilian animals

We reached half of our list of endangered Brazilian animals and who will take the honor (in this case, it's more like dishonor, isn't it?) of being in fifth place is the Black-squid. For those who don't know it, it's a kind of monkey that lives in the Amazon.

Unfortunately, the black saki, this little monkey so funny that it looks like it went to the barber, has been suffering from predatory hunting and, mainly, from the deforestation of its habitat. As a result of this destruction, their food became scarce, since, with the fall of trees, the fruits so fundamental for their survival are increasingly rare.

04. Margay

Anyone who is a gatekeeper will certainly be saddened to discover that a species of wild cat is also at risk of extinction. In this case, it is the margay, which for decades hunted for the sale of its fur.

Found in the Amazon, Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, Pampa and Pantanal biomes, the margay is currently suffering much more from the deforestation of its home than from hunting. With the destruction of its natural habitat, the species has become vulnerable to extinction, as pointed out by the ICMBio Red Book (2016).

03. Jacutinga

Have you ever heard of the jacutinga? If not, then let us introduce you. This animal is a bird of the cracid family that inhabits virgin forests in the Midwest and Southeast regions of Brazil, mainly in the Atlantic Forest. Until the 1950s and 1960s, the piping guan was relatively common in this habitat. Well, it was!

Unfortunately, in current times, this bird has been suffering too much from hunting and habitat loss, which has drastically reduced its populations. No wonder it is classified as one of the Brazilian endangered animals. In fact, in some states such as Bahia, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, it has already become extinct, and it is only possible to find it in the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

02. Maned wolf

Found in the Cerrado, in the Pantanal and in the Pampas, the Maned Wolf, scientifically called Chrysocyon brachyurus, is considered the largest canid mammal native to South America, reaching between 20 and 30 kg in weight and up to 90 cm at the withers. Today, he was chosen to symbolize the two hundred reais banknote.

However, what is expected is that the maned wolf is not only on the 200 reais bill, but that it manages to survive the danger of extinction it faces. The species is endangered mainly due to the destruction of the cerrado for the expansion of agriculture, in addition to being run over, hunting and diseases caused by domestic dogs. However, it is adaptable and tolerant to changes caused by humans. For example, today, the maned wolf occurs in areas of the Atlantic Forest that have already been deforested, where it did not originally occur.

01. Golden lion tamarin: the symbol of endangered Brazilian animals

Finally, to end our list of endangered Brazilian animals, we have the golden lion tamarin, the first species that we learn that is at risk of no longer existing in our fifth grade biology classes. Well, this animal, which we study so much, inhabits the Atlantic Forest and has suffered for decades from deforestation and its trafficking, which resulted in the almost total elimination of the species.

Today, the few individuals that exist are restricted to the remnants of forests in the state of Rio de Janeiro. But not everything is bad news! Fortunately, with the support of projects in the conservation units where they are located, the situation tends to improve. Incidentally, it could very well have this positive expectation for others, right? It wouldn't be bad at all!
