What is the Samoyed dog?
First of all, as the name implies, this dog originated in northern Russia, among the Samoyed tribes. By the way, as you may have already noticed by its very characteristic appearance, the Samoyed dog has the wolf as one of its ancestors.
Furthermore, the breed is part of the Spitz dogs, although it is one of the purest ever officially registered. Generally speaking, this pet was used to pull Samoyed sleds, the main means of transport in a region as cold as northern Russia. Even though they are descended from wolves, these dogs have always been great companions, even back then!
It wasn't until the mid-1800s that early explorers began bringing Samoyed dogs to England. Thus, he soon became known to the nobility, becoming a popular companion of that class. However, the breed migrated to the Americas only 100 years later, in the mid-1900s.
It didn't take long for the Samoyed to become popular, as it has always been a gentle, docile and strong animal. Although some specimens may present the second layer of fur with a more beige tone, the overriding color must be white. In addition, its fur is soft, with a full mane around the neck.
Finally, this is a muscular dog with strong bones and a broad chest. Its ears are triangular, erect and set high on the skull but well apart from each other. Although it has a strong and robust muzzle, its almond-shaped eyes, which are almost always brown, give the breed a cute and gentle look.
How much does a dog of this breed cost?
First of all, remember that this is a typical dog from the cold regions of northern Russia, where it used to hunt and pull sleds. That is, the climate of our country does not favor the popularity of the breed. However, you can find kennels that specialize in Samoyed dogs if you want to acquire a puppy of this breed.
However, be prepared to pay a good amount, as a Samoyed puppy can cost R$11 thousand! Even if you are not looking for a competition dog, the minimum price for a puppy is R$4,000.00. By the way, if you are really looking for an animal that maintains the standards of the breed, it is important to look for a quality kennel.
Therefore, be wary of breeding sites and places with values well below this average. It is worth remembering that you should try to visit the kennel and meet the ancestors of the puppy you intend to acquire. This way, you will avoid buying a sick puppy that deviates from official Samoyed standards.
How big does it get and how long does it live?
Although it is a strong dog and used to high intensity physical exercises, the Samoyed dog is not a large animal. In this sense, this pet is medium-sized, with a height that varies between 53 centimeters at the withers for females and 57 centimeters for males.
In other words, don't let his bushy coat fool you, as he's not that big! By the way, this dog can weigh up to 30 kg, depending on its height. However, the general average ranges from 20kg to 23kg. It is worth keeping an eye on and choosing a good feed together with your veterinarian to promote a healthy animal throughout its life.
In general, the Samoyed is a strong breed, but it can present some health problems characteristic of the breed. First, hip dysplasia can be common, causing hip joint problems, pain, and difficulty walking.
In addition, the breed can also present vision problems such as progressive retinal atrophy. Therefore, it is important to keep regular appointments with the veterinarian, as well as routine examinations. That way, you will ensure a healthy animal and a good prognosis. When healthy, this dog can exceed 12 years of life.
How to raise a Samoyed puppy?
Precisely because it is a breed created to pull sleds, in addition to hunting, the Samoyed is a dog that needs regular physical activity. That is, he has a high energy level, which means that you will need to take him for a walk every day. Incidentally, the breed is quite playful and enjoys varied activities.
Well, as you might expect, its double coat requires special care. First of all, if you don't want to deal with excessive shedding, it's important that you brush your Samoyed puppy at least three times a week. Meanwhile, contrary to what many think, baths don't need to be frequent and you can keep them monthly or quarterly.
Furthermore, this is a dog that likes and needs to stay close to its owners. That is, he prefers to stay indoors with the family. In this sense, this dog is very sociable and docile, and can be ideal for those who have small children at home or even for those who are going to be a pet owner for the first time.
However, the breed is not indicated for those who have pets of other species. In fact, because of their hunting instinct, it's not a good idea to let pets be together unsupervised. In general, this animal is very friendly and loving, but it is necessary to socialize it from an early age.
