What is the Pyrenean Shepherd dog?

Although it is a very famous dog in France, the origins of the Pyrenean Shepherd dog remain unknown. However, this is believed to be one of the oldest breeds in the world when it comes to sheepdogs. In fact, the breed is not the result of crossbreeding, having developed naturally in the Pyrenees mountain range.

By the way, there are many myths about the origin of the breed, and there are those who believe that they are direct descendants of bears from the high valleys. Meanwhile, others say that the Pyrenean Shepherd dog was the dog of the people who painted the walls of caves in southeastern France, the complex of Lascaux.

It was in the 19th century that the breed began to spread outside French territory and later became popular by accompanying soldiers during the First World War. During the war, they served as messenger and rescue dogs, carrying out important missions for the French army.

Although standards for this breed were registered in the 1970s, the Pyrenees Shepherd only became officially recognized in 2009. While their fellow dogs, the Pyrenees Mountain Dogs are robust and large animals, this breed is smaller and more agile.

Generally speaking, there are shorter or longer haired variations, but their coat is somewhat rough to the touch. The main colors are fawn and grey, but harlequin and blue are also accepted. In addition, they have a broad head, with almond-shaped eyes and triangular, drooping ears, giving the breed an air of docility.

Well, as we already mentioned, these dogs are not very popular outside France. Therefore, it can be difficult to find a kennel that specializes in the breed. By the way, it is important not to confuse the Pyrenean Shepherd Dog with the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, as the latter are much larger than their companions.

In general, the Pyrenean Shepherd dog has a price range of R$2,000.00 to R$5,000.00. Thus, the price will depend on the Pedigree of the puppy, the sex and the lineage to which it belongs. For example, dogs descended from successful competitors are much more valued.

However, one thing is certain, it is imperative that you know very well the kennel or breeding center where you are going to acquire your puppy. In this sense, be sure to go to the place and visit the animals, if not to ensure the health of the dogs, then also to check the quality of life they lead.

This way, you can check if the family follows the standards of the breed, in addition to avoiding taking home a sick pet. By the way, keep an eye on clandestine kennels and run away from very tempting offers. So, look for references and referrals from other customers to make sure the place is safe and reliable.

How big does it get and how long does it live?

First of all, the Pyrenean Sheepdog is the smallest of the herding dogs that exist. While their working companions, the Pyrenees Mountain Dogs are robust animals for guarding, the Pyrenees Shepherd is slender, medium and agile. However, its body and legs are strong and muscular to withstand everyday activities.

On average, the height of dogs of this breed varies between 40 centimeters and 46 centimeters at the withers for females, and 42 centimeters to 48 centimeters for males. By the way, as we already mentioned, these dogs are smaller than other herding dogs, and their weight does not exceed 15 kg!

Another positive point of the breed is that it does not have hereditary health problems. However, these animals can present some diseases characteristic of old age. For example, hip dysplasia, causing difficulty in locomotion, and retinal atrophy, which can lead to blindness.

Therefore, it is very important to carry out routine examinations on your furry friend, in addition to scheduling appointments with the veterinarian at least every 6 months. This way you will ensure that your pet is strong and healthy and will avoid more serious problems. In general, the Pyrenean Shepherd lives about 12 years.
