What is the Basset Hound puppy?
First of all, the Basset Hound, as its name implies, is a dwarf dog often used for hunting. That's right, the smell of this animal is extremely accurate and its breed was developed to hunt small animals like rabbits, mice and hares.
Although the Basset Hound dog originated in France, the breed as we know it today was better developed and improved in England. However, its records are not so popular, so that its origin was only credited to the French after an illustration from 1585 was found in a hunting book.
Furthermore, the Basset Hound had many ancestors until the breed standard reached what it is today. Many believe he has Basset de Artois mixes in addition to the Beagle and Bloodhound. Although it appeared in the middle of the 16th century, the breed only became recognized in 1935.
The most accepted colors of its coat are the tricolor of white, black and brown, the bicolor alternating between the three main colors and other combinations with gray and caramel. In addition, the hair is short and in parts of its face it is possible to see some folds. Its muzzle is long and the ears are large and drooping. In fact, the wrinkles on the face end up creating the illusion of sad eyes.
Furthermore, the main characteristic of this pet is its short and muscular paws. Its body, although close to the ground, is long and robust and its tail is straight, thicker at the base and thinner at the tip. It is worth remembering that this is one of the best sniffer dogs in the world.
How much does a dog of this breed cost?
Although the Basset Hound dog is a breed well known around the world due to its appearances in cinema and literature, not all families choose it as a pet. That is, it can be a little difficult to find a puppy of the breed for acquisition.
That way, it's important to look for qualified kennels and reliable breeders to be sure of the breed standard. By the way, many places end up selling puppies for a lower price than what is practiced in the market, and this happens because these places ignore the welfare of the animals. Therefore, be careful with values that are too tempting!
Well, precisely because they are somewhat difficult to find, Basset Hound puppies have a higher price. In general, you can find animals ranging from R$1,500.00 to R$3,000.00. In this sense, the puppy's gender, pedigree and pet lineage may end up increasing the value of the Basset Hound.
How big does it get and how long does it live?
First of all, many people look at the short legs of the Basset Hound and immediately assume that this is a small breed. However, this is an erroneous thought, as these dogs can weigh much more than they appear.
Although they are dwarf dogs due to the length of their legs, they have a long, robust and heavy body. In general, males of the breed can weigh up to 30 kg, while females should weigh around 23 kg. However, its height does not exceed 60 centimeters at the withers, making it a medium-sized dog.
In addition, due to its characteristic anatomy, the Basset Hound can present some diseases such as obesity, for example. If this happens, it can trigger other problems such as displacement of discs in the column and parrot beaks. Also, their floppy ears can be prone to otitis and parasites.
As for genetic diseases, the Basset Hound has only a few related to blood clotting, but they can be fatal for the pet. However, although it has some peculiarities, this is a healthy breed and its life expectancy is around 12 years old.
Incidentally, it is worth remembering that consultations with veterinarians should be regular, as well as routine examinations, vaccinations and deworming. In this sense, a well-cared-for dog is more likely to have a better prognosis in case of illness. So keep an eye out!
How to breed a Basset Hound puppy?
First of all, these animals are very lively and love to play and run. However, remember that your spine is delicate and it is important to take special care of it. Incidentally, prevent the pet from going up and down from high places or even stairs.
Furthermore, these dogs are very patient and welcoming, and can be perfect with children of any age. Affectionate and friendly by nature, they enjoy making friends with everyone and feel the need to get out and smell the locals. So take your dog for a walk often so he can get distracted.
Although it is a short and thick haired dog, it is good to pay attention to the folds of its body. In that sense, wrinkles can be a full plate for fungus and skin allergies. So, when you bathe your Basset Hound puppy, be sure to dry his ears and folds very well.
Finally, another essential care for the breed is its food. That's because Basset Hounds are prone to obesity. That is, talk to your trusted veterinarian to choose a balanced feed and correct feeding times. When that pet becomes overweight, it can trigger other health issues, so stay tuned!
