What is the Airedale Terrier dog?
First of all, the Airedale Terrier dog is an ancient breed and its direct ancestors are believed to have been the now extinct black and brown terrier. The breed emerged as a hunting dog to exterminate pests such as rats, foxes, and even aquatic animals, although they did not have much swimming ability.
Thus, the first specimens were crossed with terriers that lived near the River Aire, in England, with the aim of developing the animal's aquatic skills. Thus came the Airedale Terrier, as it is known today. Incidentally, since then these animals have been experts in hunting otters, being recognized as an official breed in 1978.
Soon after, these dogs ended up in the exhibition world and again the breed was mixed, giving rise to other terriers. Currently, Airedale are good choices for companion dogs, although they are very agitated since their hunting origin still speaks louder in their genetics.
In this sense, these dogs are muscular, with a high tail, pointing upwards. In addition, its head has the very characteristic shape of terriers, almost without a forehead, with folded ears and the famous “beard and mustache” on the muzzle. The Airedale Terrier's eyes are small and dark in color.
The characteristic terrier coat goes with the Airedale, which should not vary too much from black and tan. Incidentally, their hair is thicker and rougher, and when they grow they look like they are curled. Although many confuse, there is no white variation of the breed, this being a totally different animal, the Fox Terrier.
How much does a dog of this breed cost?
Well, as we said before, this breed ended up participating in several exhibitions, becoming a famous dog breed. That is, if you are thinking of acquiring an Airedale Terrier puppy, know that its value should vary according to its lineage.
Thus, if the puppy is a descendant of champions, the value of the animal tends to be more expensive. In addition, it is worth remembering that, regardless of the lineage, it is important to know the ancestors of the pet you are interested in acquiring. This can prevent you from adopting a puppy that is sick or does not meet breed standards.
Generally speaking, values for an Airedale Terrier dog vary between R$3,000.00 and can reach R$7,000.00 depending on the pedigree and ancestors of the puppy. That is, this is not a cheap breed, so run away from values that are far below the standard, as they may come from clandestine breeders that do not respect the welfare of the animal.
How big does it get and how long does it live?
Firstly, Airedale Terriers are considered the king of terriers, but do you know the reason for this nickname? Well, this breed is the largest breed of terriers among existing variations. However, he is not a large dog, as his height and weight characterize him as a medium dog.
In this sense, the Airedale Terrier dog has a height of about 58 centimeters at the withers. By the way, the size does not usually suffer many variations, but the weight can be different between males and females. While males can weigh up to 32 kg, females weigh around 25 kg.
Although the Airedale Terrier breed is healthy, it is important to maintain regular appointments with the veterinarian, as well as routine examinations, vaccines and vermifuge. In addition, due to its size, it can be common for the dog to develop diseases such as hip dysplasia.
Still, the breed has a good life expectancy, ranging from 10 to 13 years old. It's worth remembering that well-cared-for dogs can exceed the average age of the breed, so it's so important to visit the veterinarian and perform routine exams at least once a year.
How to raise an Airedale Terrier dog?
First of all, if you intend to acquire an Airedale Terrier puppy, it is very important that you understand the real need for exercise and activities that he requires. Therefore, if you don't have time or can't take him out for a walk and play, maybe this is not the ideal breed for your profile.
By the way, did you know that the Airedale Terrier is among the 30 smartest breeds in the world? For that reason, it's also important to challenge your intellect, or you could find yourself with a bored dog indoors. But don't worry if you don't live in a house with a big backyard, as the breed can adapt to its surroundings as long as you take it out for exercise.
Furthermore, this pet has a dominant personality, but can get along well with other animals as it is also playful and friendly. In addition, the Airedale has a very protective character, being courageous and obstinate in protecting its family.
Another important point to take into account when it comes to the breed is that it has a certain tendency to obesity. Therefore, it is important to maintain a balanced diet with a quality feed. So, consult your trusted veterinarian to find the best option.
