What is the Boykin Spaniel dog?
First, it was in the early 1900s that the breed emerged in South Carolina, in the United States. In this sense, hunters at the time already had dogs that were game collectors, that is, they would collect the game that was shot and bring it back to the owner. Back then, men would travel in boats down rivers, loaded with weapons and supplies, looking for birds and other animals to hunt.
However, with so many utensils, food and people inside the boats, it was difficult to also accommodate a Retriever dog, which had the task of collecting game. Thus, the need arose for a hunting breed that was smaller but as agile as the others.
Then came the Boykin Spaniel, an intelligent mix that has Retrievers, Springer Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels, Pointers, among other hunters as ancestors. Thus, the Boykin Spaniel became so beloved by the residents of South Carolina that it would become the official state dog years later.
Dogs of this breed are robust, with muscular yet compact limbs. Furthermore, its head is broad, with a flat top, long muzzle and flat ears. In addition, their eyes are also quite characteristic, yellowish or brown in color, have a rounded shape and medium size.
Finally, its coat is one of the characteristics that most attracts attention in the breed. Their hair has a double layer and different lengths in certain parts of the body. They are wavy in places, dense, and mostly brown in color.
How much does a dog of this breed cost?
First of all, if you intend to become the owner of a Boykin Spaniel puppy, it is important to start researching a good kennel in your area. Take the opportunity to visit the place, meet the dogs that live there, and ask the opinion of other breeder customers. In addition, it is very important to know the parents of the puppy you intend to acquire, to be sure that it will be healthy.
Although it is a very popular breed in the United States, it is difficult to find a specimen of the breed here in Brazil. That is, the prices practiced are based on those practiced in American kennels. Thus, a puppy can vary between US$800.00 and US$1,500.00. Given the heat exchange rate, this value can be somewhat high.
Therefore, doubt sales of puppies over the internet with values that are completely different from those practiced on American soil. After all, you won't have any guarantee of the breed's pedigree and could end up funding animal cruelty. Be suspicious!
How big does it get and how long does it live?
Well, the Boykin Spaniel dog breed unfortunately has some genetic diseases that are quite characteristic of these dogs. First, the most common of these is hip dysplasia, a hereditary disease that causes a malformation of the hip joint. Thus, it can cause difficulty walking, climbing stairs or sitting.
In addition, other joint diseases may appear, such as patellar dislocation and degenerative myelopathy. Furthermore, these dogs are quite prone to developing otitis externa due to the shape of their ears. Incidentally, as a dog that loves physical activity, the Boykin Spaniel can develop a heart anomaly due to continuous exercise.
However, all of these problems can be diagnosed and treated, and the prognosis is greatly improved if discovered early. That's why regular visits to the veterinarian are important. If well cared for, animals of this breed can live up to 16 years.
Finally, the Boykin Spaniel is a compact animal with muscular legs and oval paws. In general, males measure around 43 centimeters while females reach around 42 centimeters.
Although the difference in height is not so great, the weight of males can reach up to 18 kg while females should not exceed 15 kg. Therefore, the Boykin Spaniel dog breed is considered medium-sized.

Furthermore, Boykin Spaniels love water and, if your dog comes to play and gets wet, make sure his ears are completely dry to avoid otitis.
