Those who like cats, don't just like them in real life. A drawing, a movie or a book that has cats in the main roles always grabs our attention, doesn't it?

That's why a lot of people cheered when the Warner released the first trailer of the movie tom & jerry. Mixing actors and animations, the film will show the duo fighting and breaking everything in New York.

Before them, however, another cat that everyone likes had already won the screens. Of course we're talking about Garfield, and his two movies, where the fat, gluttonous feline was voiced by Bill Murray.

What few people know is that cats are much more present in cinema than we think. Whether in adaptations of Poe's tale – The black Cat – whether in superhero productions (such as batman It is the catwoman), for those who like felines, there are thousands of options on the big screen.

Here, we list 20. Can you guess some of them? The first one even won an Oscar! See our list, prepare the popcorn (and snacks) and enjoy!

(tip: Alice in Wonderland not on the list)

20. The adaptations of The black Cat

The master of the American horror story, Edgar Alan Poe, wrote one of the stories we most read and love: The black Cat. In it (ATENTION PRO SPOILER), a supernatural cat attacks its owner, when he commits a gruesome murder (END OF SPOILER).

This plot, of course, served as inspiration for several films, in general, along with other stories. Actors such as Bela Lugosi (who played Dracula in 1931) and Vincent Price acted in two of them. The master of zombie horror, George Romero, directed another.

Great choices for those who like scares, movies like Walls of Dread It is Two Satanic Eyes are the chance for you to see ghoulish cats!

19. Puss in Boots (DreamWorks)

movie spin off shrek, the 2011 version starring Antonio Banderas. The film follows the idea of mixing characters from different fairy tales.

In the plot, the cat of the title wants to redeem himself for robbing a bank alongside Humpty Dumpty (a character from English folklore in the shape of an egg), paying off his debt. To do so, he just needs to get a golden egg from the goose that lays them. However, many twists and turns, including magic beans, derail their plans.

With elements of western, romance and action, and a plot full of surprises, the film was a success and earned a series on Netflix. A sequel is in production, with no release date set.

The tape is fun for the whole family, with all the innovative elements of the Shrek franchise!

18. The Catwoman

Film that was a public and box office failure, Catwoman starring Halle Berry promised to be this heroine's moment to shine. Directed by French Pitof, a specialist in visual effects, the film did not convince the public.

The story, unrelated to the universe of Batman and company, shows the story of Patience Phillips, who works in an industry, and is murdered after discovering a plan to produce a harmful cosmetic.

Revived by Egyptian cat gods, now Catwoman seeks revenge.

As unpretentious fun, the film is pleasant, but nothing much more.

17. Madam's cat

A 1956 film by Amacio Mazzaropi, it marks Odete Lara's film debut and is our second Brazilian representative on this list.

The plot tells about a lazy shoeshine boy who, on one of his deliveries, finds a lost cat. Then, he discovers that it is the animal of a millionaire, offering a reward to whoever finds the kitten again.

However, a gang of criminals is also watching the cat, and then the confusion begins.

With the innocent humor that characterizes Mazzaropi's productions, the film makes audiences of all ages laugh. Like all of the country master's films, it is available on YouTube.

16. The Cat (Dr. Seuss)

Based on the children's book by American writer Dr. Seuss (father of the Grinch), turned into a movie in 2003, starring Mike Myers. Originally, the film was called “The Cat in the Hat”, and tells the story of a cat in a red and white striped top hat, who appears to distract two brothers when their mother is not at home.

With a text in verses, and a touch of adventure, the book is a classic of American children's literature. The film, however, performed poorly.

Still, it's a great choice for homes with bored kids and busy parents.

15. Cats

Musical film based on the Tony Award-winning play (the most important in American theater), in turn, based on the children's book by the poet TS Eliot.

With a cast of superstars (Judi Dench, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Jason Derulo among others), the film performed poorly. The stories of street cats, in their dreams, plans and ideas, however, delight fans of musicals.

One of the greatest tributes to the furry ones that anyone could conceive, cats it's fun for the family who enjoy singing and dancing.

14. The Extraterrestrial Puss in Boots

A Brazilian children's production, somewhat… Different. The 1990 film, with Maurício Mattar, tells the story of Puss in Boots based on one detail: the feline, in fact, came from another planet.

Following the consecrated story, and with a very refined make-up work, the film is worth as unpretentious fun, for those who want to laugh a little.

13. The Aristocats

The Disney film is, even today, one of the classics of the American studio. The last film with a screenplay supervised by Walt Disney, production began in 1966 but was not released until 1970.

In the story, in Paris in the 1920s, the cat Duchess and her kittens, Berlioz Toulouse and Marie, need to return home after being abandoned by the butler Edgar, with an eye on the inheritance of the feline tutor. For this, they will have the help of Thomas O'Malley, bohemian cat and his friends.

With captivating songs, humor and action scenes, the tape is a classic of children's cartoons, and can currently be watched by disney+.

12. Like cats and dogs

First film of a successful franchise. Even though cats are the villains on the tape, it's still one of our favorite movies.

From 2001, and with a star cast (Tobey Maguire, Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon), the film brings the old fight between dogs and cats, but now, with cats wanting to control the world. For that, they need to eliminate the dogs. The methods include high technologies.

With lots of action and comedy, it's a movie that kids love.

11. Felix the cat

Many people know Félix the Cat through drawings and strips. Few people know, however, that the character starred in her own film, in 1988.

Despite being a failure with the public, it is a film that pleases fans of the black cat with its fancy yellow bag.

In the plot, Felix needs to help a princess who is about to suffer a coup d'état by her uncle.

Good for children who don't know the character, maybe disappoint adults, however.

10. The Rabbi's Cat

French animated film directed by renowned illustrator Joann Sfar. The 2012 film was very well received by critics, but not so much by the public.

In the plot, in Algeria in the 1920s, a nameless cat devours the rabbi's parrot, its guardian, and begins to speak. Deciding to be more devoted to his tutors, he decided to study Judaism instead.

A twist, however, forces the rabbi and the cat to begin a journey across the African continent. Thus, the cat gets to know other cultures, nations and peoples of that place.

Marked by criticism of European colonialism, it is a children's film, but without the truisms of tapes of this genre. It mainly appeals to adults with an interest in social issues.

09. A cat in Paris

French cartoon, directed by renowned directors Alain Gagnol Jean-Loup Felicioli, in 2010, is a touching fable about the friendship between a girl and her cat.

The tape, which competed for the Oscar for best animation in 2012, tells the story of Dino, a cat who, during the day, is Zoe's best friend. At night, however, he teams up with Nico to commit petty theft.

All goes well, until the night Zoe follows her pussy, but falls into the hands of a violent gangster. Now, it's up to Dino to play the hero.

A film with beautiful scenery, an original story, and sentimental moments, A Cat in Paris it's the right ribbon for families where the cat is the great hero of the house (that is, all of them)!

08. Cat's eyes

Film with three horror stories, from 1985, and script based on the short stories by Stephen King, also a screenwriter. The film was a box office success worldwide, although today it is less known than works like “It” or “Carrie, the stranger”.

In the plot, a mixed breed cat is the link that connects three plots.

In the first, a macabre anti-smoking treatment. Already in the second, we see a gambling addict losing control of his bets. In the third, a monster terrorizes a girl.

Perfect for those who like scares, terrifying plots, the true protagonist of the film is the cat.

07. Doraemon

Character from a manga (Japanese comic book) from 1969, created by Fujiko Fujio. Doraemon is known for its cute form, that of a blue robot cat that helps the boy Nobita Nobi.

The stories always bring ecological, ethical and moral messages. The success of the publication was enormous, and gave rise to an anime (the cartoon), in 1973, and several films, from 1980 onwards.

The character's success was such that the Japanese government instituted Doraemon as the manga's first world ambassador.

A must for fans of the genre, it's a classic!

06. Felidae

Film released in 1994, which, despite being a cartoon, is not for young children. Here, we follow the cat Francis, who investigates a series of murders committed against felines.

Based on the 1989 bestseller by the Turkish-born German writer Akif Pirinçci. The film performed timidly at the box office, but among fans of adult animations, it gained status as a Cult.

With violent scenes, doses of suspense and terror, Felidae it's a movie for those with a stomach. The book, sold out in Brazil, can be found here.

05. Oliver and the gang

Disney's 1988 film, featuring songs by Billy Joel, was a huge studio hit.

Based on the soap opera Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, tells the story of an orphaned cat who is part of a group of dogs and their tutor, who live by applying small scams, in search of money.

Everything changes, however, when the group finds itself dealing with a rich child, kidnapped by a local crime boss.

With fun songs, and a characterization of New York scenery, the film is fun for the whole family!

04. I became a cat

2016 light comedy with a motivational message starring Kevin Spacey. It had a modest box office (it made $57 million against a budget of $30 million).

In the plot, Tom Brand (Kevin), is an executive who only thinks about making money. Without realizing it, however, his personal life is falling apart. Everything changes when Tom, looking for a pet for his daughter, suffers a spell in the shop of the mysterious Felix Perkins: He turns into a cat.

Now, Tom needs to race against time, to return to being human. Along the way, however, he starts to relearn the value of family life.

Funny tape, with touching moments and a super cute cast. Good for anyone who wants to see a high-spirited movie with kittens.

03. Kedi

One of the most original films on this list, Turkish director Ceyda Torun's documentary follows Istanbul's alley cats. It also features interviews with people who live with them.

The main difference is the focus of the director. Ceyda chooses 7 cats, and with hidden cameras, follows their daily lives, their personalities, their personal dramas.

That is: within the documentary there is also the story of 7 cats from Istanbul, each one a unique (and cute) character!

A film for you to be moved, laughed, and marveled at.

02. A stray cat named Bob

British film of 2016, box office success worldwide. Based on musician James Bowen's memoir of his time on the streets of London, trying to make a living from his art, while battling drug addiction.

His great friend and supporter is none other than the orange cat named Bob. The film, starring Luke Treadway, had Bob (who died in June of that year) playing himself.

A story of friendship, resilience and courage. Film with a cat to bring to tears, and for those who love their cat, and know: there is true love there!

01. Harry and Tonto

1974 film, starring Art Carney (actor from the golden age of Hollywood cinema). The tape earned the artist an Oscar for best actor, and is a true fable about rediscovering life.

Harry is an elderly man living in New York who lives with his cat, Tonto. All goes well until his building is sold to a demolition company. He decides, then, to go to Los Angeles, to live with his son; however, a problem at the airport sends him on a bus trip across the interior of the United States.

Swapping the bus for a car, and meeting hitchhikers of all kinds, Harry goes on a series of adventures, while reflecting on life.

A touching film about friendship, old age, and hopes, and above all, about continuing life despite all the problems.
