Cat-proofing your home: easy tips for health and safety

Anúncios

Cats are curious by nature and can easily get in all sorts of mischief around the house. If you just adopted a new cat, or want to know more about cat-proofing your home, keep reading!

1. Cat-proofing your plants

Be careful about what plants your feline has access to since many are poisonous to cats. Among the most commonly encountered are lilies, azaleas, daffodils, tulips, among others. Non-toxic options include African violets, bamboo, feather palm, basil, coriander, etc. ASPCA has a very thorough list of toxic and non-toxic plants for cats.

Finally, remember cats like to chew on leaves. So if you want to keep your non-toxic plants intact, make sure they are out of reach. Alternatively, you can offer a pot of cat grass he can nibble on.

2. Food

Keep food somewhere that isn’t accessible to your cat when you are not around. Consider childproof locks to store cleaning products or medicines, for example. Coffee, alcohol, chocolate, grapes, raisins, etc., will cause GI problems in your cat.

Most importantly, always check with your vet to know what is safe and what isn’t.

3. Cat-proofing your trash

If your cat likes to venture into the trash, make sure to get a can with a secure lid. There is a risk your cat could ingest something toxic for him or hurt himself with sharp edges, such as can lids.

4. Check for chewable objects

First of all, everything can become a toy to your cat. Blind strings. They look like perfect toys to her. However, she can get tangled up in them or even strangle herself. Your cat also might be interested in cords for electronics, which have an obvious risk if she chews on them. Hide them or tie them up high when possible.

  • Don’t forget to hide strings such as dental floss or yarn. While you can use them to play with your cat, if you leave her unsupervised with these items, she can swallow, which can cause stomach problems.[9]
  • If you can’t get them out of reach of your cat, you can make them taste bad. Use a cat-safe spray, such as bitter apple.
