Understand the problem of still taking place testing on animals for cosmetics
For years the testing of cosmetics on animals has been debated and opposed. Although it is already banned in some states and countries, it is still a risk and continues to happen.
These tests aim to understand whether or not new products pose a risk to human health and integrity. However, for this they use animals, which causes them suffering. In addition, they use them precisely for testing products that are often not even indispensable.
Therefore, this testing is shown to be true cruelty. Furthermore, it is not by chance that the brands that apply them are not considered Cruelty Free. After all, they use it to profit from the lives of innocent beings.
Cruelty free products: what are they?
Today much is said about cruelty free products. But do you know exactly what they are? Meet today and see the advantages and why to use them.
What is an animal test for cosmetics?
Testing cosmetics on animals is nothing more than testing the safety of a cosmetic product.
Cosmetic is a product intended for personal hygiene, perfumery and beauty used externally. Thus, this test is nothing more than checking the safety of the product to human health. However, for this, animals are used.
That is, beings for which the product does not even turn are used in the tests. And this, by the way, in times when there are already several methods that replace them and that do not affect their well-being or their lives.
For example, today it is already possible to recreate 3D human tissues. Also, use cell cultures. This, in turn, would dispense with the use of animals. In addition, these alternatives are recognized by the scientific community and by health and product inspection bodies.
Testing Cosmetics on Animals: How Are They Done?
There are several types of cosmetic testing on animals. They are mainly given to test the following conditions:
- Substance toxicity;
- Substance corrosivity;
- Product irritability;
- Dermal sensitization (ability to generate allergies).
For this, the most commonly used animals are rabbits, especially in the cosmetic industry.
The test, then, depends on the forced exposure of the animal to the substance, which may or may not be kept there. However, thus, there is the analysis of the reaction for a specific number of days.
Thus, the danger of the substance or product is stipulated according to its reaction on the animal's skin, gums or eyes. If the reaction has been negative in such a way that there is no possibility of cure, the animal is sacrificed. If not, it will return to testing other products soon.
However, notice how this is extremely cruel and disregards the welfare of other animals.
This, incidentally, disregarding the fact that all lives matter, as well as the existence of methods that, today, dispense with these tests.
Furthermore, it is important to point out that cosmetic testing on animals is currently being increasingly rejected by specialists. After all, studies have shown that rabbit and human skin react differently to products.
Therefore, not only are these tests replaceable today, but alternatives to them are much more effective. With that, there is little doubt about the need for testing on animals, in the cosmetic area, to be prohibited.
Moreover, today, in Brazil, some states prohibit the use of animals in tests of this type.
However, among them are Paraná, São Paulo, Pará, Amazonas, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul. However, there is still no federal law that does so.
