What is the Bulldog puppy?
First of all, it is important to remember that there are many variations of the Bulldog puppy. In general, these dogs appeared between the 17th and 18th centuries in different places around the world. Although experts have older records of the breed's ancestors, nothing is confirmed with accuracy.
Incidentally, the Bulldog is believed to be a descendant of Tibetan dogs, as there are many similarities between their records. In fact, the breed was often used as fighting dogs, or even as bait in bullfights! Some believe that its short extremities gave it advantages against these animals, which ended up having difficulty throwing them away.
The first examples of the breed that have been recorded appeared in England, hence the name of one of its variations, the English Bulldog. However, smaller variations of the breed ended up appearing in some litters, being promptly rejected by the English. Then came the French Bulldog, as the toy version of the Bulldog became popular in France only.
Soon, the American Bulldog emerged shortly afterwards, with the breed being developed for herding and livestock control. However, this variation is more robust than the French one, having characteristics similar to its English origins. Furthermore, there are other variations of the breed, including in Brazil, each with its own peculiarities.
In general, these dogs are robust, muscular, but the main feature is their brachiocephalic face and drooping cheeks. In addition, these dogs have skin folds and large eyes, some variations are more popped, others a little smaller. But one thing is certain, they are all deeply docile and loving.
How much does a dog of this breed cost?
Although it is a very popular breed in Brazil and in the world, the value of a Bulldog puppy tends to be higher. This is because the breed requires special care, mainly due to its striking physical characteristics, such as its snout, for example.
In this sense, many breeders and kennels in Brazil have played an increasingly intense role during breeding. Thus, the objective is to reduce the intervention of procedures such as cesarean sections or artificial insemination in the reproduction of these animals. So, the longer the time devoted to the litter, the more expensive the pup tends to be.
Generally speaking, dogs of the English variation usually cost between R$5,000.00 to R$8,000.00. Meanwhile, the French Bulldog tends to range between R$3,000.00 and R$5,000.00, with the American variation being the cheapest of the three. However, it is worth remembering that there are other variants of the breed, and you need to research carefully to find a reliable kennel.
By the way, the Bulldog dog requires special care in its reproduction. So make sure your puppy's ancestors are healthy by visiting the place where you're going to acquire the pet. Thus, you will make sure that the breeder respects the welfare of the puppies and you will avoid funding animal cruelty! So keep an eye out!
How big does it get and how long does it live?
Although the Bulldog is a robust, muscular and strong animal in all its variations, it generally has a long list of health problems. Incidentally, one of the reasons to know the kennel and the breeding site before acquiring the puppy is to be sure that your pet's parents are healthy animals.
Thus, the chances of you acquiring a puppy with health problems are lower. However, Bulldogs require special care mainly due to their large, bulging eyes and brachiocephalic snouts. Therefore, avoid exercising excessively, as this dog tends to get tired easily.
In addition, these dogs can have problems such as hip dysplasia, joint problems and obesity. However, its life expectancy can exceed 12 years when properly cared for. So keep your vet appointments up to date, as well as routine exams, vaccinations and deworming.
Although these dogs have similar physical characteristics, the French Bulldog tends to be smaller than the others and its size does not exceed 35 centimeters at the withers and 15 kg. Meanwhile, their English and American Bulldog relatives are larger. The English variation reaches 40 cm at the withers and weighs up to 30 kg and the American Bulldog is larger, reaching 70 cm in height and weighing up to 40 kg.
How to raise a Bulldog puppy?
Well, as you have already noticed, the Bulldog is a sensitive animal that needs some special attention from its guardians and veterinarians. In that sense, it's important to avoid sharp surfaces that could hurt your big eyes. Also, taking care of your folds is also essential to avoid fungi and allergies.
Furthermore, if you do not like physical exercises and prefer a calmer dog, the Bulldog is ideal for you. Due to his brachiocephalic face, he should not perform intense physical activities, as he has difficulty breathing. In fact, these animals have a quieter personality, and are even excellent dogs for small children.
By the way, be sure that you will be able to keep your Bulldog puppy company and not leave him alone. This is because this animal may suffer from separation syndrome, as it is very attached to its guardians and family. In addition, these dogs are very docile, loyal and patient.
