What is the Australian Cattle Dog?
Well, the breed, also known as the Blue Heeler, got its name thanks to its ability to bite the heels of the herd without hurting them. In other words, the Australian Cattle Dog emerged with the aim of herding Australian cattle in the 19th century.
First, this dog had as a direct ancestor the now extinct Smithfeeld, the Collie and the Bull Terrier. Thus, a mixture of the three genetics created the Australian Cattle Dog. Later, this breed suffered even more mixing with Kelpie dogs, being officially established in 1890.
Although it has undergone several mixes over the years, the idea was always to create a tough animal that could navigate tough working conditions in Australia. That's because the Collies couldn't adapt to the climate and arid soil of the place, leaving something to be desired when grazing the herds.
Thus, a strong dog emerged, with a slightly long and muscular body. Its coat is short and quite resistant, its colors vary between mottled blue, with black and reddish spots. In addition, its tail is slightly curved, firm and elongated.
The Australian Cattle Dog is a harmonious dog, its body is proportionate and imposing. In addition, its muzzle is also strong, not too long, and the ears are triangular and erect, facing the inside of the head. Incidentally, he has a very attentive and courageous air, true characteristics of the breed.
How much does a dog of this breed cost?
Although the breed is popular in Australia and some regions of England, it is still spreading in Brazil. As such, it can be a little difficult to find a kennel specializing in the Australian Cattle Dog in your area.
In fact, it's very important that you get references from other buyers to make sure the breeder you choose is reliable. In fact, try to visit the place and meet the puppy's ancestors to ensure that the animal is healthy and will maintain breed standards.
In this sense, there are many clandestine kennels that do not value the health and well-being of the animals and you can end up financing these places if you do not verify the origin. In general, the values of the Australian Cattle Dog vary between R$1,000.00 and R$2,500.00, so avoid breeding places that are far from this margin.
How big does it get and how long does it live?
Well then, the Australian Cattle Dog emerged precisely as a strong breed that could withstand the adversities of Australia's climate and environment. Thus, these animals are considered robust, healthy dogs and hardly affected by diseases.
However, there are some genetic problems that may or may not manifest in your dog. First, the most common of the breed is patellar luxation. This disease consists of displacement of the animal's knee, causing pain and difficulty in locomotion. If this occurs, take your dog immediately to a veterinarian and have the treatment accompanied by a professional.
In addition, the Australian Cattle Dog can also present progressive retinal atrophy, leading the animal to blindness, and also to congenital deafness. That's why it's so important to visit the kennel where you intend to acquire the puppy, to make sure it belongs to a healthy bloodline.
In general, this breed has a good life expectancy, reaching 14 years of age. However, regular visits to the vet, routine exams, deworming and vaccination guarantee a good quality of life for your pet.
Although it is a robust dog, the Australian Cattle Dog is a medium-sized dog, and its height varies between 45 centimeters and 51 centimeters at the withers. In addition, its weight must not exceed 20 kg without becoming an obese animal.
How to breed an Australian Cattle Dog?
First of all, the main characteristic of this animal that you need to consider before choosing a breed is its energy level. In this sense, these dogs emerged to herd flocks, that is, they are pets that need space to run, and physical activities of high energy expenditure.
In addition, the Australian Cattle Dog is very intelligent, which means that he also needs a mental stimulus so he doesn't get bored. In that sense, dogs with a high level of boredom can develop unwanted behaviors, so keep an eye out!
Furthermore, the Blue Heeler is not a dog that requires a lot of care, and its coat is easy to care for. He doesn't need a lot of brushing, as he doesn't usually lose much hair, except in the changing season. By the way, this dog loves water, and you can take advantage of it when bathing.
Incidentally, it is worth remembering that, due to the energetic personality of the breed, contact with very young children is not recommended. In this sense, the Australian Cattle Dog can end up being a little rough, although he likes to play a lot. Generally speaking, they love the company of their guardians and physical separation from their family is not something they tolerate very well.
